The Ridgeway, Britain’s oldest road, follows the same route over the high ground used since prehistoric times by travellers, herdsmen and soldiers. Travel on a journey through time for 87 miles (139 Km).
One of fifteen long-distance National Trails in England and Wales, the Ridgeway travels for 87 miles (140 km) northeast from Overton Hill within the Avebury World Heritage Site to Ivinghoe Beacon near Tring.
For the most part, the Ridgeway stays true to its name and is a relatively easy walk spent mostly walking along ridges. The paths often provide splendid views over the relatively flat local landscape. There are some gentle climbs, and often you’ll need to head down hill to get to accommodation.
For over 5,000 years, travellers, traders, and pilgrims have followed the Ridgeway (Britain's oldest road). Stretching 87 miles across southern England, this National Trail takes you along high chalk ridges, through rolling downlands, and into the heart of Britain's natural and cultural heritage.
